From the Imperial Period to the Era of Democracy and Totalitarianism Regarding the Changes in the Position of the Nobility in the Bohemian/Czech Society in the First Half of the 20th Century
Original language description
This paper discusses the milieu of the aristocratic elite on the background of the political and social changes, in particular with regard to Bohemia in the first half of the 20th century. The disintegration of the Austro‑Hungarian Empire and the rise of national states, including the Czechoslovak Republic, was a radical change (and not just for the aristocracy). In this respect, the study focuses on two questions: How was the aristocracy able to establish itself in the liberal democratic civic environment where noble ranks and privileges meant nothing? What strategies did it adopt to that end? Aside from democratic lines of thinking, the aristocracy also had to deal with the advent of communist and fascist ideologies. Seen from this viewpoint, what shaped the aristocracy’s actions and what consequences did it bring? The paper also includes an assessment of the current state of knowledge in the context of Czech historiography and an outline of the potential for research into the topic.
