Uranium in Environment and in Population of the Czech Republic

  • Original language description

The Czech Republic belongs to a group of uranium rich territories production. The first world’s uranium mine was in Jáchymov (Joachimsthal); uranium was historically mined and used initially for uranium glass and then for radium production. After World War II intensive prospecting for uranium was performed all over the Czech Republic. Uranium has been mined in large scale since 1945 in many places both in underground mines and by in-situ chemical leaching. At most mines, the mining was terminated years ago, at present, only one mine is in operation. The processing plants of uranium were operated until 1991. Waste rock piles and tailings from the mines and mills are present in many places. From the point of view of population exposure, high uranium/radium content in buildings is very important. Therefore, studies are underway investigating the content of uranium in soil, building materials, drinking water and in urine of the population.
