Adaptation to climate change in complex pathways from molecules and ecosystems to society
Original language description
During the millennia, adaptation has been an inherent property of living structures, including adaptation at the molecular, ecosystem and societal level. Environmental stress and climate change has been factors influencing adaptive responses. However, with rapid climate, environmental and global change, new reactive adaptation pathways are required. The chapter outlines the context of the book and reviews current situation in climate change adaptation, both internationally and nationally. The role of CzechGlobe and its projects in supporting adaptation process is also highlighted. The book contributions are oriented around climate modelling and analysis, molecular and ecosystem level analysis supporting adaptation science, and response at the societal level, including land use change, adaptation in cities to climate related extremes and biotechnologies for sustainable future. The chapter calls for interdisciplinary cooperation in adaptation science, strategies and pathways.
