Impact of green, gray, and hybrid infrastructure on flood risk in partly urbanized catchment

  • Original language description

Floods are considered one of Europe’s most frequent natural hazards, causing considerable damage and posing threats to human lives. To cope with the unpredictability of flood disasters, various mitigation strategies are currently being implemented, including green (nature-based solutions), hybrid, and gray measures. Nature-based solutions and green measures offer a promising approach to address multiple challenges related to flood hazards. These measures can contribute to flood mitigation and improved water quality. However, the effectiveness of these measures depends on design and implementation strategy. This study is carried out to outline the most appropriate flood mitigation measures for the partly urbanized Glinščica River catchment in Ljubljana, Slovenia. In the study, gray measures such as permeable sidewalks and cisterns, green measures such as urban trees and rain gardens, and hybrid measures such as stormwater tree trenches and green roofs were selected for rainfall-runoff modeling. The study analyzes the effectiveness of flood mitigation measures using HEC-HMS hydrological modeling. The results indicate that rain gardens were the most feasible.
