The potential of Historical Climatology for (environmental) History in Germany, the Czech Republic and Slovakia

  • Original language description

Historical climatology is an interdisciplinary field at the intersection of climatology and environmental history, utilizing documentary evidence to analyze past climate conditions and their impacts on societies. This study focuses on the development of historical climatology in Central Europe, specifically in Germany, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia, with an emphasis on progress made since the 1990s. It explores key data sources, methodologies, and major research areas, including the reconstruction of past climate variability, the societal and economic impacts of climate extremes, and historical perceptions of climate. While early contributions to the field were made by pioneers such as Gustav Hellmann, Hermann Flohn, and Fritz Klemm in Germany, and Karel Pejml in the Czech Republic, Slovakia lacked similarly prominent figures. The study highlights the role of historical climatology in environmental history and its potential for understanding long-term climate change and societal adaptation strategies.
