The Rhine Crisis 1840
Project goals
The Rhine Crisis of 1840 originated from a conflict in the Near East that began in 1839. The different opinion of the mode of the conflict?s settlement finally led to the diplomatic isolation of France in which, consequently, an outburst of national feelings and the French?s claim on the occupation of German Rhine regions occurred. The French belligerency led not only to the deterioration in the relations between France and other Great Powers but also to the upheaval of German patriotism with an apparent anti-French spine. The German-French animosity from the end of the Napoleonic wars was thus revived. Though the war, by a considerable number of contemporaries regarded as inevitable, finally did not break out, the Rhine Crisis had serious consequencesfor shaping modern German nationalism and the evolution of German-French relations. The Rhine Crisis is interesting not only from the point of political but also social, military and even cultural history. Despite this fact, no monograph in English wasdedicated to it, and merely one German dissertation thesis was published in 1967.

Rýnská krize z roku 1840 byla reakcí na blízkovýchodní konflikt mezi osmanským sultánem a jeho egyptským guvernérem, který začal v roce 1839. Odlišný postoj velmocí k řešení této blízkovýchodní krize nakonec vedl k diplomatické izolaci Francie, ve kterénásledně došlo k výbuchu národních vášní a volání Francouzů po obsazení porýnských oblastí Německého spolku. V důsledku této válkychtivosti se nejen zhoršily vztahy mezi Francií a ostatními mocnostmi, ale také se vzedmula vlna německého patriotismu s výrazným protifrancouzským ostnem. Německo-francouzská animozita ze sklonku napoleonských válek byla tímto oživena. Ačkoliv válka, kterou mnoho součastníků považovalo za neodvratnou, nakonec nevypukla, události Rýnské krize měly vážné důsledky pro formovánímoderního německého nacionalismu a vývoj německo-francouzských vztahů. Rýnská krize je zajímavá nejen z pohledu politických, ale také vojenských, sociálních a dokonce kulturních dějin. Přesto jí dosud nebyla věnována jediná monografie v anglickém jazyce, v německém jazyce pak pouze jedna disertační práce vydaná v roce 1967.
