In the framework of the project, the Masaryk University will participate at two work packages: Work package 4 “Rivaling citizenship claims elsewhere“ and Work package 8 “Political rights”. The main objective of the WP4 is to examine past and contemporary experiences of countries with multiethnic settings, and to study and compare the ways in which such countries have dealt with multiple civic identities. Masaryk University participants will deal with the case study of the Czech Republic and her history of state formation and her experiences (problems, solutions, etc.). As a part of the WP 8, the Masaryk University participants will follow objective to examine role of member countries’ parliaments in the process of the EU decision-making and its control. Involvement of national parliaments in EU policy formation will be examined according to following research questions. 1. How do national parliaments monitor policy making in the European Council and Parliament? 2. Is this done regularly or only incidentally? 3. What percentage of parliament time was spent on monitoring and debating EU policy proposals in the last three years? 4. What were the typical obstacles to getting involved; and what factors were facilitating? Data sources will be the minutes of the meetings of five national parliaments, other documents of these parliaments, and interviews with some of their members. Countries to be studied are France, Germany, the UK, Sweden, and the Czech Republic.
