To collect existing forest and soil data (e.g. satellite, maps, forest inventory, ICP, available statistics, soil maps) and consider management practices in order to develop a framework for assessing the mitigation potential of forest ecosystems at regional and European level. The specific objectives are to: - Analyse and harmonise European data sets in order to assess the mitigation potential of forests, this includes above- as well as below-ground carbon in biomass and soil; - Link available data setsfrom forest inventories and the MODIS satellite with large-scale ecosystem biogeochemical-mechanistic modelling tools; - Conceptualise a European modelling framework to assess mitigation potential and strategies for forest management, and estimate, using this framework, total carbon content (below- and above-ground part) of European forests at present; - Evaluate disturbance history, and assess large-scale mitigation potential of European forests to address their impact on the carbon flux dynamics of European forest.
