Phosphine Ligands for Environmentally Friendly C-C Bond Forming Reactions

  • Annotation in Czech

This grant project aims at minimizing the negative environmental impact of Suzuki-Miyaura reaction as a prominent representative of practically important transition metal-catalyzed process through improving the ligand design. It is based on our previous work by which we have demonstrated that even a typically hydrophobic ligand can be made highly hydrophilic by introduction of charged amidosulfonate pendants. Within this project we would like to build upon this synthetic approach through its modifications and applications to other prominent ligand scaffolds that have been already recognized as catalytically privileged structures. The syntheses and catalytic tests will be performed with support from extensive physicochemical measurements and theoretical computations in order to gain an insight into the nature of factors determining catalytic properties and to base the design of the particular catalyst component upon rational grounds. In other words, the key objectives of this grant projects is the design, preparation and catalytic evaluation of new efficient ligands for Suzuki-Miyaura reaction performed in water and water/organic solvent biphase systems that could make this reaction less environmentally demanding. The design will be based on the combination of conventional variation approach (synthetic structure modification) and in silico studies.

This ENVIPHOS project was based on sharing expertise of the participating teams which was accomplished. The project promoter benefited mostly from the implementation of new theoretical approaches, while the Norwegian partner advantageously utilized the results and ideas of the project promoter in improving their computational approach toward ligand design. Both teams brought very good scientific results and publication. The overall project rating is very good.
