First-principles study of mechanical properties of ideal metallic fiber nano-composites
Project goals
Composites represent one of widely used successful ways to improve mechanical properties of materials, in particular their elastic moduli, strength and fracture toughness. Recently, nano-fibers started to be used as reinforcement in composite materials. The aim of the proposed research is to understand the fiber composites properties at the atomistic level. First principles methods (based on electronic structure of crystals) will be employed for this purpose. Ab initio calculations of elastic moduli andtheoretical strength of composite lamina having continuous nano-fiber reinforcements will be performed using pseudo-potential plane-wave code. Obtained results will be used to verify validity of macro-scale empirical relations for composites (rules of mixtures) on the nano-scale level. Understanding the mutual interactions of fibers and the matrix can help to design new nano-fiber composites with better parameters.
