Estimation and Analysis of Structural Unemployment in Central and Eastern European Economies
Project goals
Based on the estimates of the New Keynesian Phillips curve for the Central and Eastern European economies under various specifications of real marginal costs, state-space models with a link between the estimates of the New Keynesian Phillips curve and NAIRU as a state variable measuring structural unemployment will be set up. These semi-structural models will be further used for the analysis of NAIRU by augmenting the state equation with additional variables which will capture possible effects of hysteresis, long-term real interest rate, shares of employment in especially exported-oriented sectors of the economies and migration. The key outcomes of the project will be a rigorous analysis of the determinants of inflation and structural unemployment in the selected economies and also estimates of some structural parameters which might be used in calibration of DSGE models.

Odhad a analýza strukturální nezaměstnanosti v ekonomikách střední a východní Evropy

S využitím odhadů nové keynesovské Phillipsovy křivky pro ekonomiky střední a východní Evropy při různých specifikacích reálných mezních nákladů budou formulovány state-space modely, v rámci kterých bude na strukturální model nové Phillipsovy křivky navázána stavová proměnná v podobě NAIRU jakožto měřítka strukturální míry nezaměstnanosti. Tyto semi-strukturální modely budou dále využity pro analýzu NAIRU tím, že příslušná stavová rovnice bude postupně rozšířená o další proměnné, které budou zachycovat možný vliv hystereze, dlouhodobé reálné úrokové míry, podíl zaměstnanosti v především proexportně orientovaných odvětvích a migrace na vývoj NAIRU. Hlavními výstupy projektu bude rigorózní analýza determinant míry inflace a strukturální nezaměstnanosti v analyzovaných ekonomikách a odhady některých strukturálních parametrů, které mohou sloužit pro kalibraci DSGE modelů.

Project results evaluation
The objectives of the project can be considered accomplished. The approach which uses the calibration on GMM estimates improved the estimation of the state-space models and subsequent NAIRU analysis. Instead of 6 impacted publications the project resulted in 2 publications in journals with lower impact. However, the results may be considered adequate .
