Hebrew and Latin literary exchanges in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Period: Berekhiah ben Natronay ha-Nakdan and his reception
Project goals
The Hebrew writings of Berekhiah ben Natronay ha-Nakdan are important documents of the medieval intellectual history of the Jews in Normandy and of the interest in sciences in medieval Hebrew tradition. They also shed new light on the Jewish-Christian relations in the Middle Ages, since Berekhiah heavily relied on Latin and Old French literary and scientific sources. The history of reception of Berekhiah's works is also of high interest: his collection of fables were translated into Latin by a seventeenthcentury Jesuit in the Czech Lands. However, Berekhiah's person and works has received surprisingly little attention in secondary literature so far. The proposed project attempts to describe the encounters of Hebrew and Latin literary traditions in the oeuvre of Berekhiah and in the fate of his books until the seventeenth century.

Literární vztahy hebrejského a latinského písemnictví ve středověku a raném novověku: Berechja ben Natronaj ha-Nakdan a recepce jeho díla

Project results evaluation
The project brought valuable results in quality periodicals, or in monographs in prestigious publishing houses. Those results will be relevant to various fields. Nevertheless, some publications (incl. the main monograph) have not yet been printed and can not be thus recognised. Missing the main result of the project is a reason for evaluating the project as "completed with reservation".
