Generalized Image Retrieval and Relation Discovery
Project goals
Image retrieval is an important and active area in computer vision. Applications include content based browsing and search in large image collections, visual localization, image annotation, data collection for 3D reconstruction and many other. Most of the current state-of-the-art retrieval methods address similarity search, trying to find the most visually similar images to the query. In the project, we will generalize the retrieval of related images beyond search of visually similar images. We will study various definitions of relatedness, investigate algorithms for efficient search, and derive novel representations that support search and discovery of related images. An evidence of relatedness in the form of a set or a sequence of images has to be retrieved together with the related image in order to provide and verify the answer.

Vyhledávání obrázků je důležitý a aktivní proud v počítačovém vidění. Aplikace zahrnují prohlížení obrazových databází na základě vizuálního obsahu, vizuální lokalizaci, popisování obrázků, sbírání dat pro 3D rekonstrukci, a další. Většina vyhledávacích metod provádí podobnostní vyhledávání a snaží se nalézt k dotazu vizuálně nejpodobnější obrázky. V tomto projektu budeme generalizovat vyhledávání souvisejících obrázků mimo vyhledávání vizuálně podobných obrázků. Budeme studovat různé definice souvisejících obrázků, algoritmy pro jejich efektivní vyhledávání, dále vytvoříme nové typy reprezentací obrázků, které umožní vyhledávání a objevování souvisejících obrázků. Důkaz souvislosti obrázků ve formě množiny či posloupnosti bude nalezena spolu se souvisejícími obrázky, aby bylo možné tyto výsledky ověřit.

Project results evaluation
The project was stopped after 1 year as requested by the principal investigator who got a prestigious ERC.CZ project. However, significant results concerning retrieval of images and their relations were achieved and published in 6 papers at top conferences. A significant part of the goals (though not all and, in general, not so deeply) together with most publication plans were thus fulfilled.
