Ways of imagining with children’s nature nonfiction (WONDER)
Project goals
A traditional view is that nonfiction conveys information; to feed their imaginative faculties, children are expected to read fiction instead. As artistic nonfiction blooms worldwide, we ask how contemporary children’s nature books guide children’s imagining and what it means to imagine when texts are fact-driven and heavily illustrated. Combining expertise in children’s reader response, children’s literature theory, and language, WONDER aims to: 1. Digitally analyse a multimodal corpus of acclaimed Czech children’s nature books, based on components of imagining derived from literary studies and other research. 2. Conduct creative focus groups with children. 3. Conduct interviews with selected authors. 4. Conduct linguistic analyses and revise our initial findings bottom-up. Our top-down components are ‘life-text links,’ ‘defamiliarisation,’ and ‘possibility thinking.’ We will contribute to literary studies writ large, develop a procedure for digitised word & image analysis including linguistic markers, and produce child-centred conclusions transferable to publishing and education.

Dětská nonfikce o přírodě jako nástroj imaginace (WONDER)

Za zásadní pro rozvoj dětské představivosti se běžně považuje četba beletrie, zatímco nonfikce bývá vnímána spíše jako zdroj informací. V současnosti však pozorujeme globální rozmach nonfikce s uměleckými rysy. Projekt WONDER bude zkoumat, jak tyto knihy podporují imaginativní prožitky a jak se dětská imaginace v kontextu faktu vůbec projevuje. V projektu se propojí tři sféry odbornosti: dětská čtenářská recepce, teorie dětské literatury a lingvistická analýza. Cílem projektu bude: 1) multimodální analýza korpusu oceněných děl současné české dětské nonfikce o přírodě, 2) výzkum dětské recepce těchto textů v kreativních ohniskových skupinách, 3) výzkum autorského procesu pomocí rozhovorů, 4) lingvistická analýza získaných dat. Výchozí teoretické rámce zahrnují odkaz na osobní zkušenost (‘self-text’), ozvláštnění (‘defamiliarisation’) a přemýšlení v hypotetické modalitě (‘possibility thinking’), budou však rozšířeny o podněty dětských účastníků. Projekt přispěje k poznání o literatuře a metodám práce s multimodálním textem, zároveň má potenciál obohatit vzdělávací a tvůrčí praxi.
