    Exploring the neglected role of VRN1 in barley development

    The transition from the vegetative to the reproductive stage is crucial for plant architecture and inflorescence formation. In crops, proper timing of flowering directly affects seed production and yield. This project focuses on the role of the MADS-box transcription factor VRN1 in barley (Hordeum vulgare) development. VRN1 has been described as a key regulator of vernalization in cereals. However, as an ortholog of the floral homeotic protein APETALA1, it likely influences other developmental aspects, including the identity of the shoot apical meristem (SAM). To clarify this function, we developed a unique VRN1-EGFP reporter line. This enables us to track VRN1 expression dynamics in the differentiating SAM and identify its DNA binding sites and protein interactors. Additionally, we generated CRISPR/Cas9 vrn1 mutants, which will be analyzed for morphological and transcriptional changes. This project will reveal the neglected function of VRN1 in barley, with a special focus on its role in SAM and inflorescence development.
