Milk thistle-based dietary supplements – liver protectants or hidden enemy?
Annotation in Czech
The first part of the project focuses on the combined biological effects of silymarin and mycotoxins in milk thistle-based dietary sup-plements. It builds on the applicants' previous research and includes in vivo experiments designed to confirm hypotheses derived from earlier studies. The second part of the project focuses on tropane alkaloids (TAs), whose frequent presence in silymarin prepa-rations has been recently discovered by the applicant’s team. This issue raises societal concerns, as a relatively high occurrence, mainly driven by climate changes, has also been detected in common cereal foods, including baby food, in recent years. The project aims to map and describe in detail the mechanisms of chronic toxicity, which have not been a primary focus of the TAs research so far. As this type of study is entirely new, it will be carried out primarily in vitro using advanced molecular genetic mechanistic analyses. In addition to that, research will also address the issue of occurrence of TAs, including the new, so far non-annotated ones, posing potential toxicological risks.
