The project investigates morphological complexity not only in inflection, as has been the focus so far, but also in derivation and other word-formation processes. Dealing with five typologically diverse languages, it explores the morphological structure of words using large-scale linguistic data. The project (1) investigates inflection and word-formation as inseparable phenomena, (2) compares morphological complexity as outlined in linguistic theory with real-world usage as documented in text corpora, and (3) examines differences between native and loan vocabulary within and across languages. The research team, consisting of three senior experts in linguistics and natural language processing and two PhD students, will present the project findings at international conferences and in a series of articles in top-tier academic journals. Additionally, the team will organize a workshop at a prominent theoretical or computational linguistics conference, inviting the international community to engage in the discussion on the broader exploration of complexity as proposed by the project.
