The Trap of the Everyday: Czech Literature on Screen 1970–1995
Annotation in Czech
This project examines film adaptations of Czech literature during the Normalization period and the early 1990s. It aims to prove that the phenomenon of film adaptations cannot be limited to the aesthetic analysis of selected (often canonical) works, nor only to the study of films as representations of historical and cultural processes. By integrating adaptation and intermedial studies, the project conceptualizes film adaptations as dynamic systems that interconnect various media, production conditions, and reception contexts. Analyzing a comprehensive corpus of adaptations from 1970 to 1995, it explores how different adaptation processes have shaped and continue to shape the memory of everyday life during and after this period. In doing so, the project offers a new perspective on cinema, literature, and the sociocultural history of the Normalization era. It also represents a methodological shift in adaptation studies towards local and regional specificity.
