Do pollutants with thyroid receptor antagonistic activity increase the susceptibility of fish and amphibians to pathogens?
Annotation in Czech
Some endocrine disruptors interfere with the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid axis in vertebrates. Thyroid receptor (TR) blockade, mainly of TRβ, is one of the well-documented modes of action of thyroid disrupting chemicals. This activity has already been documented in the aquatic environment. As the thyroid controls several immune pathways, it is hypothesised that thyroid disrupting chemicals may also affect the immune response of fish and amphibians living in polluted areas. As a result, animals with an impaired immune response may be more susceptible to pathogens normally found in the aquatic environment. Both fish and amphibians are considered to be among the most endangered groups of animals. It is therefore necessary to search for environmental factors that cause their decline. In the proposed project, model fish and amphibian species will be exposed to substances with anti-thyroid activity during early development, when their thyroid and immune systems are forming. The immune response and susceptibility of the animals to selected pathogens will be studied.
