The Costs and Benefits of Observing Humanitarian Aid for Social Cohesion

  • Annotation in Czech

The number of conflicts has risen in recent years, forcing people to flee to other countries, including over six million Ukrainians seeking refuge in Europe. Successful integration of refugees is crucial for social cohesion and, thus, the stability of the host societies. Interconnecting pressing societal issues, this project investigates how observing help for refugees shapes social cohesion in terms of attitudes, behaviors toward, and policy support for groups receiving help. It differentiates between various types of help (e.g., housing, donations) and investigates the effect of help provided by institutions vs. individuals to distinct refugee groups (e.g., Ukrainians, Syrians). It addresses a) socially and theoretically relevant mechanisms that underlie the effects of help on social cohesion (e.g., realistic threat), b) boundary conditions influencing the strength of those effects (e.g., refugee group’s similarity to the host society), and c) complexities of intergroup relations by testing generalization of these effects across distinct refugee and socially marginalized groups.
