Media and Resources in Socialist Czechoslovakia: Visual Regimes, Narratives, and Tropes
Annotation in Czech
Resource extraction is a fundamental pillar of modern society, underpinning industrial production, global circulation of goods and materials, consumption habits, and mobility. However, the essential dependence of this order on finite planetary resources often drops out of traditional narratives of the 20th century. Claiming that this absence is a consequence of the historically rooted invisibility of natural resources in conceptual frameworks and cultural representations, this project aims to refine this thesis by analyzing audiovisual media in postwar Czechoslovakia and highlighting the specificities of the state-socialist context. It explores extractivism as a political and cultural practice and by analyzing the patterns of its rhetoric and imagination it asks how socialist film and television both confirmed and contradicted the notion of human‘s subjugation of nature. The project aims to explore media-resource relations from the perspectives of energy humanities, geology of media, posthumanism, and ecocriticism, resulting in an academic monograph, articles, and public activities.
