Linking Methane Cycling to Plant Species and Organic Matter Quality: Restoring Peatland Function

  • Annotation in Czech

Peatlands represent a key reservoir of soil C and at the same time are a source of CH4, thereby playing an important role in the global C cycle. The below ground processes driving the C cycle require precise analysis, especially under changing land use and climate. Mined peatlands after restoration are a unique ecosystem for studying the links between plant species, soil organic matter quality and CH4 cycling. The main goals are to determine: 1) the effect of different plant species on in situ CH4 emissions and the activity and diversity of CH4 cycling microbes; 2) plant litter leachate quality and its effect on CH4 cycling; 3) SOM quality and its effect on CH4 production and 4) how DOM quality and P availability affect CH4 emissions. This will be studied on mined bogs (4 and 20 years restored) and a natural bog in the Bohemian Forest (characteristic of bogs in the boreal region). Identification of the main drivers of CH4 cycling can improve prediction of potential CH4 emissions. The results can be integrated into ecosystem-level recovery assessments and restoration optimization.
