    DrySoilCarbon: The effect of drought on soil organic carbon dynamics: role of drought intensity, initial C content and other climate change factors

    Soil organic carbon (SOC) is crucial for soil quality, and its sequestration in soil is a promising tool for climate change mitigation. However, its fate under future climate is uncertain and current estimates of soil C sequestration potential do not include the impact of future climate. Especially SOC in grasslands seems to be sensitive to drought with highly variable outcomes and unknown predictors. Drought intensity and initial SOC content are potentially important predictors of the SOC response to drought. Their role in SOC dynamics can be understood only through detailed study of both SOC inputs (root exudates) and outputs (respiration, dissolved organic matter leaching). Through a combination of manipulation experiments and modelling, we aim to study the impact of drought on SOC inputs and outputs and the overall balance of SOC including its stability. We will further determine how these responses change under elevated CO2 and temperature. Finally, using a process-based model, we will represent the effect of drought legacy on SOC dynamics under repeated drought.
