During past periods of glacial advance, glaciers overrode soil, vegetation, and marine deposits, burying significant amounts of organic matter (OM) underneath ice. The source and age, and so reactivity and availability for biological processes, of subglacial OM will determine its potential impact on regional carbon cycling and ecosystem dynamics during deglaciation. There is limited information on subglacial OM due to the difficulty of direct access and the low content in the sediment. The fate of glacial carbon under climate change and deglaciation is thus not well understood. The principal aim of the project is to determine the origin and reactivity of OM in the subglacial ecosystem of the Greenland Ice Sheet using a combined approach of indirect (collecting suspended sediment in glacial meltwater), and direct (coring) sampling of subglacial sediment and state-of-the-art analysis of present OM. The research will shed light on one of the major unknowns in the ecology of deglaciation and enable better predictions of ecosystem changes associated with climate change in the Arctic.
