Human responses to climatic deterioration of the Last Glacial Maximum: hot springs as climatic oases

  • Annotation in Czech

Climate deterioration began 26 500 years ago at the onset of the LGM. Around the time of the LGM, people gravitated towards climatically more suitable refugia, which has left a genetic signature in modern European populations. Periglacial hot springs that likely acted as local refugia have been discovered in southeastern Moravia only recently. It has been demonstrated that they acted as effective refugia for a number of arboreal species. To what degree did these thermal spring oases influence local climatic conditions while providing suitable places for human survival during the harsh LGM climate? Intensive surveys for new sites will be carried out in areas highlighted by the recent research. These areas have not previously been a focus of archaeological surveys. To test this new, intriguing ‘cultural oases’ hypothesis exploratory, limited-scale excavations to detect new archaeological sites will be carried out with the intention of finding diagnostic artifacts, charcoal for anthracological analyses and dating, as well as osteological material for oxygen isotope analysis.
