Adaptation of nematodes to anthelmintic drugs in the environment
Annotation in Czech
The widespread use of anthelmintics in human and veterinary medicine has raised concerns about their occurrence in the environment and ecotoxicological impact. The aim of this project is to determine whether long-term exposure of nematodes over many generations to trace amounts of anthelmintics causes persistent adaptive changes. Focusing on two species of nematode: the free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans and parasitic nematode Haemonchus contortus, the responses to environmentally relevant concentrations of anthelmintics will be studied over many generations (simulating real environmental conditions) using advanced metabolic, transcriptomic and proteomic analyses. A key aspect of the study is the identification of molecular mechanisms involved in the adaptation process. The results of the project could provide clear evidence that traces of anthelmintics in the environment contribute to the development of drug resistance in nematodes. This finding could support the initiatives to reduce environmental contamination by anthelmintics.
