    Metabolomics-driven discovery of plant chemical novelty and its insecticidal potential

    In this proposal, we will develop an integrative pipeline for high-throughput discovery of structurally novel natural products from plants and assess their insecticidal potential against polyphagous insects. We will combine phylogenomics and automated literature mining to prioritize and select understudied plant lineages for phytochemical investigation. We will profile the metabolite content of the selected plant species using mass spectrometry-based metabolomics, and analyze the resulting data using state-of-the-art computational tools. Using a cheminformatics approach recently developed in our lab, we will select 50 plant extracts with the highest structural novelty potential and screen them for insecticidal activity against a panel of 5 polyphagous insect species. This screening will: i) lead to the discovery of structurally-novel phytochemicals with insecticidal potential; ii) generate a large dataset of plant-insect interactions linked to their chemical profiles. This data will constitute a valuable resource for other disciplines (e.g., entomology, chemical ecology).
