    Species diversity anomalies: Key windows into the biogeography and assembly of ecological communities

    There are strong regularities in the distribution of biodiversity on Earth, but unexpected deviations occur. For example, the same biomes with similar climatic conditions can harbor different species richness. The potential of these anomalous species diversity patterns to provide key insights into the assembly of communities has been critically underused. We will investigate bird diversity anomalies in forest and savanna biomes across the world, integrating from local to global scales. Using biogeographic and phylogenetic modelling, we will analyze historical processes driving diversity anomalies. Using detailed field research and massive citizen science datasets, we will dissect local species density, richness, beta diversity, niche packing, expansion, and overlap among biomes with disparate regional species diversity to unravel factors enabling local coexistence of different numbers of species. Thus, via obtaining novel insights into the drivers of species diversity anomalies, we will help unravel critical processes maintaining biodiversity.
