    Cold spraying of beta-titanium alloys

    Metastable beta titanium alloys are an important class of materials for advanced applications. Cold kinetic spray is an additive manufacturing process (CSAM) that offers many advantages over its fusion-based counterparts and provides materials with unparalleled microstructures and properties. Our project will explore the so far unexplored potential usage of CSAM for deposition of metastable beta Ti alloys, using Ti-5553 alloy as model material. To understand the underlying phenomena triggering different microstructural features (e.g. grain structure and phase composition), we will conduct a thorough multi-scale characterization using advanced analytical tools. Using the PI’s knowledge of the phase evolution in Ti-5553, it will further be possible to provide insights into the general thermal conditions in the CSAM process, representing vital supportive information to the CSAM process modeling in the literature. Finally, we will attempt to prepare harmonic structures in the Ti-5553 alloy to potentially break the strength-ductility trade-off.
