Understanding the excellent mechanical properties of Mg-Li-Y alloys using advanced in-situ experimental techniques

  • Annotation in Czech

The proposed project aims to investigate the origins of excellent mechanical properties, especially ductility, of the Mg-Li-Y alloys intended for biomedical implant application. This class of alloys has been shown to overcome the inherently limited magnesium alloy room temperature ductility issues. However, several key aspects regarding the origin of these improvements remain unanswered. In this project, a series of mutually complementary advanced experiments, including in-situ synchrotron radiation measurements, qualitative and quantitative XRD analyses, bending tests, slip trace analysis or acoustic emission measurements will be employed to reveal the activities of individual deformation mechanisms, investigate the strain distribution between the hcp and bcc phases (for alloy in the dual-phase compositional range) and study the effects of Li solutes on the distribution of Y alloying atoms, modifying the recrystallization behavior and overall mechanical performance.
