    The research aims to clarify the mechanisms driving ruderalisation and plant diversity loss in temperate deciduous forests undergoing unprecedented eutrophication and climate extremes. The factors contributing to eutrophication remain unclear due to the complex interplay of atmospheric deposition and changes in leaf litter quality. We will use three complementary approaches to explore plant-litter interactions. First, a large-scale study will assess the key drivers of forest eutrophication across regions with varying geological substrates and deposition levels. Second, we will examine how litter quality promotes expansive species and affects understorey diversity. Third, novel long-term manipulative experiments will test how litter, canopy opening, and artificial eutrophication filter understorey species and shape functional community composition. Integrating these approaches across a broad spatial scale will provide robust insights into the effects of eutrophication on plant diversity in temperate forests.
