    Morphological and functional convergence in neotropical skipper butterflies

    This project investigates the macroecological and functional drivers of the evolution of recurrent phenotypes in Eudaminae butterflies. We aim to assess the full phenotypic spectrum of the subfamily and delimit concrete species groups having convergent phenotypes within the morphospace. By integrating species distribution modelling, climatic niche analysis and predation diversity estimates, we will test whether convergent phenotypic rings are linked to environmental factors, geographic region or are indeed predation driven. Additionally, we will assess how morphological diversity translates into flight performance through high-speed videography, exploring the relationship between flight kinematics, morphology, and predation defence in the context of repeated convergent evolution. This study offers novel insights into how selective pressures shape both convergent phenotypic evolution and functional traits, contributing to our understanding of adaptive evolution in diverse butterfly communities.
