    SEM-FIB Analysis and Phase-Field Modeling of Corrosion Damage in Reinforced Concrete

    This project investigates the effect of corrosion rate on rust composition and crack propagation in reinforced concrete. A series of impressed direct current tests will be conducted at varying corrosion rates while monitoring surface crack widths. The chemical and mechanical properties of rust, particularly the ratio of iron oxides to iron hydroxy-oxides, will be analyzed using SEM-FIB (EDS, EBSD) and nanoindentation. A pioneering micro-scale study of the corroded steel and cementitious matrix interface will combine SEM-FIB and in-situ nanoindentation to derive realistic material parameters for structural modeling. The findings will be integrated into a multi-physics model to simulate corrosion cracks at different corrosion rates. The model will be validated against experimental data, assessing the hypothesis that rust composition changes with corrosion current density, allowing extrapolation of accelerated test results to natural conditions and improving the accuracy of service life predictions.
