The Corrosive Appetite of Microorganisms: Corrosion of Mg Alloys Influenced by Methanogens and Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria in Anaerobic Environments
Annotation in Czech
The corrosion behaviour of Mg materials has been investigated in different environments for several decades and different corrosion protection strategies have been developed. However, current research overlooks the importance of microbially influenced corrosion, which can be pivotal for Mg materials applications. In this project, a comprehensive investigation of Mg alloy corrosion in anaerobic conditions will be conducted to determine the influence of methanogenic archaea, sulfate-reducing bacteria, and their mixed cultures on the corrosion process. The results will lead to the first concept of the corrosion mechanism of Mg alloy by the studied microorganisms. Furthermore, the first bifunctional inhibitor providing corrosion and microbial protection will be proposed. The project will fill a knowledge gap and lead to a revision of conventional approaches to Mg alloy protection, thus promoting their wider and more sustainable use in practice.
