The Politics of Visibility: Algorithms, Content, and Platform Regulation
Annotation in Czech
Social networking sites (SNS) shape political discourse by influencing which content gains visibility, how users engage, and how political messages circulate. The introduction of moderation tools, such as algorithmic filtering, labeling, or fact-checking, has triggered growing debate about their legitimacy, effectiveness, and impact on political behavior and institutional trust. These concerns have intensified following recent deregulatory shifts and the renewed spread of harmful content. This interdisciplinary project investigates how SNS affect democratic participation, political engagement, and polarization. It focuses on three key areas: how users perceive algorithms and how these perceptions shape political attitudes, how harmful political content is produced, circulated, and interpreted, and how people respond to different forms of platform regulation. Using a mixed-methods approach, the project provides insight into the implications of digital visibility, content dynamics, and governance, contributing to academic debates and evidence-based policymaking.
