Metabolic energy substrates in avian blood: sources of variation, impact on fitness, and role in life history evolution
Annotation in Czech
Blood glucose and free fatty acids are major energy substrates circulating in vertebrate blood, thereby playing a critical role in maintaining energy homeostasis. Despite their key role in energy metabolism and stress response, surprisingly little is known about their ecological and evolutionary significance. At the intraspecific level, we aim to address this knowledge gap by leveraging extensive lifetime physiological and fitness data from our long-term study of a barn swallow population. This will be complemented by a comparative study across tropical and temperate passerines that will offer insights into the macroevolutionary dynamics of both blood-borne energy substrates. By integrating intra- and interspecific approaches, we seek to elucidate sources and fitness consequences of variation in both energy substrates in wild birds and assess their role in avian life history evolution. Ultimately, the results of the project will establish the foundation for broader understanding the ecological and evolutionary significance of circulating energy substrates.
