Biomolecular Deposits in Fish Yolk: Developmental Blueprint or Evolutionary Remnants?
Annotation in Czech
The project aims to uncover the evolutionary significance and developmental roles of maternal RNAs and proteins, including RNA-binding proteins (RBPs), during early embryogenesis in fish. We use models that represent distinct cleavage types, from holoblastic (sterlet sturgeon) to meroblastic (zebrafish, killifish, and trout). Our preliminary results show that only 1–2% of maternal RNAs undergo relocalization across the studied models, challenging the widely accepted model of extensive biomolecule transport from the yolk to the blastodisc in meroblastic embryos. We will apply comprehensive transcriptomic, proteomic, and functional approaches to determine whether the biomolecules stored in the yolk are essential for development or instead represent evolutionary remnants of an ancestral holoblastic cleavage pattern. These findings will advance our understanding of the fundamental principles governing early vertebrate embryogenesis, including the roles of maternal determinants, cleavage architecture, and spatial organization in shaping body plan formation.
