CryoSpin – Novel Materials for Rotational Magnetocalorics

This project aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of the rotational magnetocaloric effect (RMCE) in anisotropic magnetic materials, with the long-term goal of identifying systems suitable for rotational magnetic cooling. Unlike the well-studied conventional magnetocaloric effect, RMCE— where entropy changes are driven by rotating a sample in a, typically much smaller, fixed magnetic field — remains underexplored. We will combine indirect methods (magnetic and thermodynamic measurements) to calculate RMCE magnitudes, alongside rarely-undertaken direct measurements of the RMCE in several already-grown single crystal systems. The project will target two regimes: rare-earth oxide compounds expected to exhibit significant low-temperature RMCE, and Heusler alloys with strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy for potential room-temperature applications. Our experienced and well-balanced team is ideally skilled for this task.
