Convergent adaptation to whole genome duplication in Brassicaceae

Is evolution repeatable? Convergent evolution fascinates biologists across disciplines but it is still unclear why some genes provide similar adaptive solutions while others not. We have found that gene reuse is shaped by the extent of variation shared among populations. Yet, the mechanisms acting at greater evolutionary distances remain controversial. Here, we will test if genome architecture or functional constraints play the key role by conducting a systematic analysis of repeated natural adaptation to a particularly strong yet widespread challenge: whole-genome duplication (WGD). We will (1) identify repeated footprints of post-WGD selection in the genomes of 12 Brassicaceae polyploids spanning ~25 M years and (2) leverage extensive genetic resources available for this model family to infer key genomic predictors for adaptive gene reuse. Understanding the drivers of genome convergence will uncover the role of mutations vs. functional constraints in evolution and provide clues for leveraging the predictability of genome evolution in breeding, pathogen management and conservation.
