Cytokinin riboside transporters as mediators of plant communication with beneficial microbes

  • Annotation in Czech

Plant beneficial microbes colonize plant roots to establish a symbiotic relationship, which benefits plants by, for instance, increasing their resilience to pathogens or abiotic stresses. The plant-microbe interactions are mediated by small signalling molecules, which are secreted by the microbes and have to be transported to the plant roots. These signalling molecules include plant hormones cytokinins. Much has been discovered about the cytokinins of microbial origin and their impact on plants upon root colonization, but how these molecules pass from microbes to the plant roots remains unknown. Our recent research suggests the involvement of EQUILIBRATIVE NUCLEOSIDE TRANSPORTERS (ENT) 1 a 3, two members of a family of membrane-bound carriers recognizing diverse ribosides as their substrates. Our preliminary data show that AtENT1 and AtENT3 mediate cytokinin transport across the plasma membrane and are localized in root epidermis cells, thus supporting their role in the uptake of microbe-produced cytokinins.
