    Multiphysics interaction of ice with flow in variably saturated porous media

    The project combines experimental methods and mathematical modeling of multiphysics processes of non-isothermal flow, transport, freeze-thaw transitions and structural changes in variably saturated porous media, and studies their interaction in the context of water infiltration, water recharge, and role of frozen soil layers in pollutant transport in porous media. The experimental part is based on nuclear magnetic resonance, time domain reflectometry, X-ray computed tomography, stable isotope analysis, detailed measurements of flow, temperature and volume changes in samples of different scales. The mathematical models are based on first principles of continuum mechanics, thermodynamics of phase transitions and poromechanics, and are solved by advanced numerical methods in complex geometry of heterogeneous structure of variably saturated porous media. The results of the project will be achieved in the context of a developed international cooperation and involving students of different educational levels.
