Instance-level Visual Recognition and Generation

The visual world is complex, with objects and scenes organized hierarchically. Intelligent visual systems must navigate this hierarchy, from understanding broad semantic concepts to recognizing individual object instances. At the semantic level, a system distinguishes a painting from a sculpture, while at the instance level, it identifies Convergence (1952) by Jackson Pollock as distinct from Autumn Rhythm (1950) by the same artist. Despite the broad real-world applications of instance-level understanding, it is less explored in the literature compared to semantic-level understanding. A major challenge is the difficulty in collecting training data at instance-level for deep learning. This project aims to overcome this barrier by leveraging the synergy between instance-level recognition and generation, using synthetically generated data at scale for training. We will develop methodologies that enable both recognition and generation to function effectively in real-world and open-world settings, exploring their interdependence.
