Biocomputational prediction of intergenic structures in Actinomyces

Project goals

The proposed project is aimed at the biocomputational prediction and identification of functional intergenic structures as transcription terminators, small RNAs, riboswitches and antisense RNAs in the intergenic regions in Actinomyces genomes. The Actinomycetes is a very divers bacterial class, including pathogens, differentiating bacteria, producers of antibiotics and amino acids, with large genomes. Therefore, a large number of functional intergenic structures is expected in Actinomyces, forming a complex and unique regulatory apparatus. The structures will be predicted in Actinomyces intergenic regions based on sequence conservation and genomic features, specific for the functional structures. Identification of the predicted structures will be basedon sequence and structure similarity to known intergenic structures of other bacterial species in public databases. Besides the new Actinomyces structures themselves, a new database of the structures will be established.
