Investigating ecoacoustic theories in vibrational communities
Annotation in Czech
This joint project of Slovenian and Czech researchers focuses on the vibrational communication in insect communities. Facing the biodiversity loss, there is a need for non-invasive methods to monitor ecosystems. Although bioacoustics has made a considerable progress, it is still limited to taxa that produce air- or water-borne sounds and neglects the majority of insect species that communicate through substrate-borne vibrations. The project draws on biotremology (study of animal behaviour in relation to substrate-borne vibrations) and the emerging concepts of ecotremology and vibroscape, which encompasses all vibrations in a given environment. The objective is to test the main bioacoustic theories: (a) morphological adaptation hypothesis, (b) species recognition hypothesis, (c) acoustic adaptation hypothesis, and (d) acoustic niche hypothesis, in vibrational communities. These theories, primarily studied in the acoustic domain, will be examined for their relevance to vibrational modality and their role in shaping insect communication strategies under different selection pressures.
