Unity in diversity. Supraregional trends of early medieval elite jewellery, dress accessories and other luxury metal objects in Central Europe

  • Annotation in Czech

This project undertakes a comprehensive analysis of selected assemblages of luxury metal artefacts, with a particular emphasis on their manufacturing techniques. The selection of artefacts will be based on shared typological and technological characteristics rather than their geographic origin within Central, Southern, and South Eastern Europe. The research primarily involves an interdisciplinary analysis of archaeologically recovered artefacts, complemented by written sources and art historical research. The findings will contribute to the validation of a theoretical model of elite interconnectedness in Central Europe, driven by supraregional knowledge transfer. Beyond advancing our understanding of jewellery and artistic metalwork, the project will shed light on interactions among early medieval European elites, strategies of diplomatic communication, and the circulation of prestigious objects. Additionally, it will explore the mechanisms of idea transfer in a supraregional context. The project will result in two research articles, one monograph, and an open-access database.
