Some environmental ethicists have argued for the view that all life-forms and ecosystems, in addition to humans, should be directly considered in our moral decision-making. Yet our currently urgent environmental challenges, including global biodiversity loss, occur at spatial scales far greater than those of individual ecosystems, and so existing frameworks fail to directly address these problems. This represents a serious deficit in environmental philosophy's ability to inform our responses to environmental crises. This project develops novel moral and conceptual frameworks for articulating our obligations regarding the environment at the planetary scale. Prominent existing frameworks including ecocentrism, the ecosystem services framework, and the ecosystem restoration framework will be critically reevaluated and better alternatives developed. A clearer view of our relevant values and moral obligations will facilitate decision-making and communication with stakeholders about setting global environmental management priorities.
