    Fungal diversity under the microscope: deciphering diversification and evolution of trophic strategies in Pyronemataceae

    Fungi are fundamental players in all terrestrial ecosystems and represent the second most species rich organismal group. Multiple mechanisms have been suggested as drivers of their diversification, including morphological innovations, production of novel metabolites, lifestyle changes, and host shifts. However, most studies have focused on Basidiomycota, and key diversification drivers in Ascomycota, the largest fungal division, remain largely unknown. The family Pyronemataceae includes over 600 species with diverse trophic strategies and represents a promising model for a comprehensive study of ascomycete diversification. In this project, I will utilize extensive phylogenomic and rDNA datasets to reconstruct a robust phylogeny of Pyronemataceae, and assess the effect of trophic transitions, hybridization, and selected morphological traits on diversification rates. I will further investigate host-parasite coevolution in parasitic Pyronemataceae and use comparative genomics to examine genome composition and repeatome evolution in relation to trophic transitions and diversification.
