Reconstructing past climatic trajectories to assess the vulnerability of Amazonian peatlands in a global change scenario using lipid biomarker proxies
Annotation in Czech
Tropical peatlands are among the most carbon-dense ecosystems, acting as major CO2 sinks. Despite their key role in the carbon cycle, many remain poorly studied, especially in the Amazon. These ecosystems face increasing threats from climate change and human activity. Changes in hydroclimatic conditions, including altered drought patterns, are making some peatlands more vulnerable. If degradation reaches a tipping point, stored carbon could be released, triggering a positive feedback loop that accelerates climate change. Understanding how past climatic shifts affected peat decomposition and carbon release is crucial for assessing their current vulnerability. This project will reconstruct Holocene climate changes in Amazonian peatlands, focusing on their western and eastern edges, where hydroclimatic variability is most pronounced. Using lipid biomarkers, such as brGDGTs and compound-specific stable hydrogen isotope composition (δ²H), I will reconstruct past temperature and hydrological changes to evaluate their impact on peat accumulation.
