Many authors have so far examined how the speaker’s language phonetically and phonologically influences his/her another language, i.e., phonetic and phonological Cross-Linguistic Influence – CLI. They have focused on the influence of the speaker's native language (L1) on his/her second language (L2) and the influence of the speaker's L2 on his/her L1, studying the speech of both, L2 learners living in the L1 country and first generation of immigrants living in the L2 country. Few authors, however, have yet addressed the phonetic and phonological CLI in L1 and L2 of heritage speakers (i.e., second generation of immigrants), a particular group of bilinguals: They are usually exposed to both, L1 and L2, in early childhood and often use L1 at home while using mainly L2 in broader social contexts. The current project on Salento Italian heritage speakers living in the Paris region investigates the phonetic and phonological CLI in their L1 (Salento Italian) and L2 (French) speech production, perception and cognitive processing using acoustic measurements, perception and ERP experiments.
