Characterisation of proteins comprising newly described translationally inactive ribonucleoprotein EPP particles during tobacco pollen development and maturatio
Project goals
A tobacco pollen tube wall glycoprotein, p69 is encoded by the pollen-specific gene ntp303 that is transcribed during pollen development and pollen tube growth, but it is abundantly translated only after pollen germination. ntp303/p69 represents the onlyknown example of a highly abundant pollen-specific mRNA, which is stored in mature pollen in a translationally-silent form. A significant part of ntp303 mRNA is stored in the form of newly identified translationally inactive ribonucleoprotein EPP particles that have been described based on their sedimentation characteristics and the protein composition of EPP-enriched cytoplasmic fraction. The abundant representation of stored ntp303 mRNA in the population of EPP particles clearly shows the existence ofan alternative cytoplasmic mRNA storage compartment in male gametophyte.
